The Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society (OOSS) is the only professional organization dedicated exclusively to advancing the interests of ophthalmic-driven ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) and the patients they serve. OOSS is committed to promoting the highest standards of patient care, safety, and operational excellence within an increasingly complex environment shaped by evolving technologies and regulatory requirements.
As the leading voice for ophthalmic ASCs in Washington, DC, OOSS advocates before Congress and federal agencies to ensure all ophthalmic services are eligible for Medicare facility reimbursement; promote fair, reasonable, and sustainable facility payment policies; and influence the development of effective, evidence-based regulations. In partnership with members and industry stakeholders, OOSS supports strategies that enhance patient and physician experience, drive operational performance, and enable long-term growth.
OOSS membership includes full access programs, resources, and assets designed for ASC physician-owners, administrators, clinical leaders, and staff. The organization is strengthened by industry partners who share a commitment to advancing the ophthalmic ASC community.
OOSS Advocacy in Action
OOSS advocacy delivers measurable results. The 2026 legislative and regulatory cycle is a clear example of the society’s impact:
- Successfully led a national campaign to reverse a proposed 4.7% reduction by Medicare in cataract facility fees reimbursement—securing instead a 3.3% increase over 2025 rates, marking the 26th consecutive year of payment increases for ASC-based cataract surgery. Simply stated, each cataract facility fee for 2026 generated an incremental $100 vs the proposed rule, an 8% difference.
- Advanced efforts to increase reimbursement for intracameral drugs used during ophthalmic procedures.
- Actively advocating for appropriate reimbursement of next-generation intraocular lens technologies.
- Opposed the implementation of burdensome and unnecessary ASC quality reporting measures.
- Continued multiyear efforts to prevent Medicare reimbursement for office-based cataract surgery, protecting patient safety, and site-of-service integrity.
