Alcon announced the US launch of Clareon TruPlus, a new enhanced design monofocal and toric intraocular lens (IOL). TruPlus expands Alcon’s Clareon portfolio, offering surgeons an enhanced design IOL, enabling increased depth of focus without compromising high-quality distance vision, the company said in a press release.
Based on bench data, the company said TruPlus has a number of differentiating features over Clareon Monofocal. Specifically, TruPlus demonstrates a 3.5 letter improvement in simulated visual acuity at -1.5 diopters (66 cm) compared to Clareon Monofocal; offers higher distance image quality across a range of pupil sizes and lighting conditions; exceeds the ISO upper requirement for distance image quality; and demonstrates a lower glare and halo profile.
According to Alcon, TruPlus leverages proprietary Opti-Balance Technology in the center of the lens to slightly extend the depth of focus. This design boosts light energy for an increased depth of focus, while maintaining exceptional distance image quality and a wide refractive landing zone, the company said in the press release.
“Cataract surgeons naturally want to offer patients a little more—without trade-offs,” said Terry Kim, MD, chief medical officer at Alcon. “Surgeons told us they were looking for an enhanced design monofocal that did not sacrifice distance vision quality. TruPlus was developed to address that need.”
TruPlus joins Alcon’s portfolio of Clareon IOLs that includes the monofocal; Vivity, the extended depth of focus IOL; PanOptix Pro and PanOptix trifocal IOL. TruPlus will launch in additional markets later this year, the company said.
